What makes a great vineyard? This question does not elicit a simple response as it involves a complex number of conditions. What is its aspect and slope? What is the depth of the soil? What is the texture of the soil? How is the drainage? What is the distance between vines? How wide are the rows? What micro-climates govern its rows? A vintner must wait patiently once the vineyard is planted for it is not a game of immediate gratification. The vines must establish their roots, find their balance, adjust to the surrounding environment and develop over many seasons before greatness is even possible.

Our South Hill Vineyard was planted in 1995. It has gifted us with many great vintages, the fruit of which we have blended into our Reserve Cabernet or Elevage. In 2013, we made our first single vineyard wine from this block because we thought it had its own tale to tell. The 2021 vintage saw this three-acre vineyard’s 26th year. Our patience has been well rewarded. Enjoy this small vineyard’s greatness.
