Consider the role of an award-winning supporting actor or actress in a movie or play. Their role, although considered secondary, is often critical to the development and presence of the star of the show. Such is the relationship of Merlot to Cabernet Sauvignon. So often Merlot sits in the background and allows Cabernet Sauvignon to shine while it softens the edges and makes the wine complete. At Chimney Rock, occasionally we choose to give Merlot a starring role. In 2018 Merlot once again, made a dramatic appearance in our vineyards. It showed great density and power and clamored for a show of its own. Since 2018 was a cooler vinatge, it allowed tannins to perfectly ripen while preserving beautiful acidity and lower sugars, which resonated well for the age worthiness and balance of the vintage. This Merlot is a blend of two of our blocks — Pegasus Merlot and our North Hill Merlot. The hillside is a warmer, more exposed site with shallow soils while the Pegasus is a cooler spot on the Estate with more loamy soils.AROMA: This magical Merlot abounds with aromas of blackberry, cocoa powder with hints of vanilla, clove and lavender.
FLAVOR: Upon entry this wine is silky and rich which is typical of Merlot, yet demonstrates some power on the palate. It finishes with velvety tannins and a beautiful acidit
