At first glance, the vineyard block where our Clone 4 Cabernet is planted, looks quite ordinary. One might think that it is just another group of vines, planted like any other on a flat part of our estate. However in viticulture, one learns that you must look a little closer to truly understand a vineyard. Walk towards these vines and look closer, and you will note that the Cabernet clusters that grow here are loose, small and scraggly. The size of the berries, tiny—you might think them to be blueberries they are so small. The vines seem to struggle and the canopy is not full and dense. The explanation is hidden just a few feet below, where a very shallow hardpan in the soil causes these vines to struggle and behave much like grapevines on a steep hillside. This magnificent vineyard exclaims, “never judge a book by its cover,” you might just miss something extraordinary.
